Tropies for OnlineHelden.de

The company I used to work for needed some tropies for a an award ceremony and recruited me to make some for them :-)

They’re laser cut birch, sanded super smooth and finished with beeswax.

The bases are multiplex and were a right puzzle to figure out how to join to the tops- it took me, 2 professional carpenters, 3 different power tools and actual spilt blood to make the slot!

Necklaces/keyrings

I read about a technique for inlaying veneer into solid wood using the laser cutter (if you want to try it yourself, the epilog blog has a good summary), so off I went to try it out:

all four

the orange wood is cherry, the brown is wenge and I’m not sure what the white is, probably  poplar

more pictures and things I learned in the process below!

It’s a sign! Again!

DSC02365

I promised to make a sign for a friend- it was supposed to look like the sign on my front door, but a got a little (well, more than a little) carried away…

This one is wallnut, with birch inlaid. Instead of using veneer, this time it’s all solid wood connected with chainmail links and finished with beeswax.

Betterplace.org Blinkenlights site activity monitor

At www.betterplace.org we have the usual array of startup dashboards, analytics and things that go *ping* when something explodes, but I wanted something a bit more physical to display what was happening on the site. So, I built a real time display of what actions users were taking on the site- every time someone makes a new donation, creates a new user, or writes a new blog post etc. a blinkly light goes blinky.

CAM00477

Donation map on the left, blinkenlights on the right.

Carry on reading to find out how it works behind the scenes:

I needed some more light in my room, so I made some backlit movie posters:

Big one and the little one

The little one was a prototype so I could figure out how to make the big one

Napkin holder

So, my mum wanted a fancy napkin holder, because putting them straight on the table apparently just isn’t classy enough.

A coffin for Bori (don’t worry, she’s fine)

My friend Borbala Szente had a funeral and asked me to build her a coffin. She’s not actually dead or anything, but she had her funeral anyway and a grand time was had by all :-p

(she’s an artist, this isn’t even the strangest thing I’ve seen her do)

The woodworking plans came from the obviously named http://diycoffin.com/ and we did most of the woodworking at the awesome regenbogenfabrik in kreuzberg.

As usual, check out the build process after the jump…

A tardis (design by markp)

An awesome chap called markp not only made a laser cut tardis, but he also put the design files up online, so anyone can make their own: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:19824

So I did!

Some shots of the build process are after the jump:
